hello all,

VMM console crashes after refreshing Cluster virtual machine, so i found 2 errors in the event viewer

Event ID 2605, unable to connect to the vmm database because of a general database failure.

Ensure that the sql server is running and configured correctly then try the operation again.

then followed  event ID 1999 .

  • I removed all the dynamic memories from all the Hyper-v VM's also max VM has 16 virtual processor.
  • I add add NT Authority/System as db owner for VMM DB.
  • VMM Admin is a sysadmin on the VMM DB.

Adding Hyper-V Cluster to VMM fails with code 13805

Hi all,

have SCVMM RTM.

have a 2 node Hyper-V cluster, both nodes are fully patched.

When trying to the cluster into SCVMM I get an error: 13805

"Unable to contact cluster service on SCLU680.xxx"

Recommende action: Ensure that the provided name is a cluster name or the computer name of a node in the cluster, and that the cluster is listed in Active Directory Domain Services. For a newly created cluster, you might need to wait for the cluster name to be added to Active Directory Domain Services.

Strange thing is that I was successfull 2 weeks earlier in adding this cluster to the beta release of SCVMM ...

For completeness: I also check the " Reassociate host with thsi virtual machine manager server" ...

Anyone an idea ?

BR, Peter

Hi all,

I am running a fail over cluster of

Host:
2 x WS2008 R2 Data Centre

managed by VMM:
VMM 2008 R2

Virtual Host:
1x windows 2003 64bit guest host/virtual machine

I have attempted a live migration through VMM 2008 R2 and im presented withe the following error:

Error (10698)
Virtual machine XXXXX could not be live migrated to virtual machine host xxx-Host01 using this cluster configuration.
 (Unspecified error (0x80004005))

What i have found when running the cluster validation:

1 out of the 2 hosts have an error with RPC related to network configuration:

An error occurred while executing the test.
Failed to connect to the service manager on 'xxx-Host02'.
The RPC server is unavailable

However there are no errors or events on host02 that are showing any probelms at all.
In fact the validation report goes on to showing the rest of the configuration information of both cluster hosts as ok.

If it was an RPC connection issue, then i shouldnt be able to mstsc, explorer shares to host02. Well i can access them, which makes the report above is a bit misleading.

I have also checked the rpc service and it has started.

If there is anyone that can shed some light or advice me oany other option for trouble shooting this, that would be greatley appreciated.

SMB FileShare registration problem after adding two nodes to an existing cluster

$

We are running SCVMM 2012 SP1 UR3 with Win2012 Hyper-V nodes. We have a ScaleOut 2012 SMB 3.0 file servers.

Everything has been running great.... until we tried to add two mode nodes to an existing cluster.

Basically the two added nodes report that they have no file share registered (confirmed via Hyper-V node properties and also Get-SCStorageFileShare -VMHost xxxx command). Running Repair-SCStorageFileShare against the cluster does not seem to make a difference.

Checking the permissions on the ScaleOut File server shows that the permissions for the two new nodes have been added. However SCVMM think that these two nodes have no file shares registered... which mean we will run into issues the minute we migrate VMs to these systems.

Has anyone seen this before? Removing and re-adding the cluster from SCVMM is not an option as we are using XenDesktop 7.0. Doing so would create a lot of issues.

Thanks - Didier.

Migrate from 2012 to 2012 R2 cluster with VMM 2012 R2

$

I want to upgrade my private cloud to 2012 R2 versions of SC and Windows. So I upgraded the DPM, SCOM and VMM in the proper order.

Then I installed a new server with Windows 2012 R2 on it. I created a new one-node cluster, configured storage and networking, so now I'm able to move test virtual machines, that turned off or have a saved state, and they work well.

Now I want to move some production virtual machines with sharing nothing live migration. But when I try to move VMs from my old cluster to the new one with VMM 2012 R2, I've got an error:

Error (23008)
The VM (VM Name) cannot be migrated to Host (Host Name) due to incompatibility issues. Virtual machine migration operation for (VM Name) failed at migration source (Old Host Name).

Things that I have checked:

  • network connectivity between the hosts - OK
  • incoming and outgoing migrations - enabled everywhere
  • authentication protocol - Kerberos
  • delegation - cifs and Microsoft Virtual System Migration Service delegation added for all the hosts
  • old hosts (HP Gen7) have an E5645 processors and new hosts (HP Gen8) have an E5-2630 processors, but all VMs have an "processor compatibility" option enabled

I tried to google an error but cannot find anything suitable for me.

Any ideas, please?

How to fix: "Virtual switch is not highly available because the switch in host is not compatible with other hosts."

Information (26845)
Virtual switch (XX) is not highly available because the switch in host (YY) is not compatible with other hosts.

Recommended Action

The above is displayed when I refresh the cluster in SCVMM 2012 R2.

I think I've narrowed down the cause, but I don't know how to fix it.

Background:

I was forced to setup this 5 node cluster in a hurry and didn't have SCVMM 2012 R2 online so I used HV Manager and Failover Cluster Manager, FCM.  This is my first SCVMM 2012 cluster, but I've been helping manage several VMM 2008 clusters for a few years, so FCM and HVManager felt like more familiar tools.  Everything has always worked fine in FCM and HV Manager to manage things.  I added SCVMM to the mix after this cluster was in production, so I'm a little hesitant to move the networking configuration from HV Manager to SCVMM.

My hunch:

All of the hosts have the exact same network adapter name under their respective virtual switch properties in SCVMM.  This problem host has a different number appended to the switch name.  Example  XX - Broadcom BCM 57810 NetXtreme II 10 GigE (NDIS VBD Client) #156 and all the other hosts are the same except they end with #131.  (XX is an external virtual switch that was setup in HV Manager on each host individually and SCVMM is just pulling in those settings.)

Why I don't know how to fix it:

My understanding is that the OS is appending that #XXX at the end of the NIC name and there is no way for the user to configure it.

Can anyone help me confirm this hunch and help me come to a resolution?

Thanks,

Glenn

SCVMM 2008R2, ISO Sharing (Constrained Delegation) -> Live Migration fails

$

I'm using System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 (SCVMM) to manage a 4 node Hyper-V cluster (Windows Failover Clustering). Our clusternodes are configured for constrained delegation so sharing ISO's is possible (and works fine once you get used to its quircks).

One thing is not working like it should: it seems impossible to live migrate a VM that has a shared ISO image mounted. When you try to live migrate a VM intelligent placement cannot find a suitable host and the error message I get is: "Virtualization platform on host <name> does not support shared DVD ISO images". I double checked the constrained delegation setup and even set Everyone Full Control NTFS permissions (as a test of course) on the library share.

Like I said: shareing ISO's (instead of copying) from the SCVMM Library Share is working fine, only live migration does not work. Any idea what's going on?

Storage Over Allocated

We are currently over allocated on a handful of our logical units, so my task is to balance this out. We have a mix of fixed and dynamic disks. I plan to inspect each VM and see if I can adjust or convert it.

I'm curious if I can get a report of all VM's in the cluster that have unallocated space and what type of disk(s) it has.

I assume if you have a fixed disk, you'll be unable report unused space - but that's more information than I currently need.

Hello All,

We have a 4 node cluster with around 100 Vm's running on it. We are getting frequent LUN disconnection issue in Hyper-V.

It just gets disconnected and come back online or sometimes we may need to bring it online.

Verified with storage team and it seems all fine with storage and its switches.

Am getting event ID 5120, 1069, Running 2012 data center version.

Any help would be appreciated.

Creating guest clusters in SCVMM 2012 R2

$

I’m very new to SCVMM so please bear with me.

I have a basic lab environment consisting of two hosts clustered using some cheap shared storage. I’ve installed SCVMM and deployed a few highly available VMs.

I want to deploy a guest cluster using with a shared VHDX.

Is the only way to do it by using a a service template, or can I do it another way? If I do, do I need to create a VM template first to then include it in my service template?

As part of the pre reqs outlined here - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn249412.aspx it says I need to have the shared VHDX already available. How do I go about creating this vhdx file on the shared storage?

Thanks

Moving a VM that is off from a host in a cluster that is also off

$

Environment:

Hyper-V 2012 R2, SCVMM 2012 R2

4 Hyper-V hosts on a Nutanix cluster, 3 vm's reside within 1 hyper-v host.  Unable to console into the vm's on this host.  The vm's are running fine otherwise (remote desktop, networking, etc. are all functional).  Shutdown a vm using the SCVMM console and it says shutting down but never changes.  Same with another vm on that host.  Remote desktop to the guest vm's and shut them down so they are off but that still never reports correctly through SCVMM console.

Decide to also shutdown hyper-v host as something doesn't seem right with it.  Status of hyper-v host eventually shows offline through SCVMM.  Guest vm's never change status (one still says shutting down).  So, now hyper-v host is offline and 3 guests are off even though their status hasn't changed through the SCVMM console.

3 hyper-v hosts within 4 node cluster are still online.  The guest vm's on the hyper-v host I shutdown are all configured for highly available.  I have tested before that they automatically move to another hyper-v host if the one they are configured to run on goes down.  However, I've never tested moving them if they are off and the hyper-v host goes down.  Trying to figure this out now but doesn't work.

Used the migrate vm wizard and that fails.  Is there any way to migrate a guest vm on a host (clustered w/ guest configured for highly available) when it is offline?  I'm not having much luck figuring this out.

Thanks.
